The Bible is brutally honest about its heroes. They are made of the same stuff as ourselves, and Jacob despite his many failings, even when “on the run”, is given a hope and a destiny. Genesis 28 (the first mention of “Bethel”–the house of God, the gate of heaven) teaches us that the church is the intersection of heaven and earth. It is the gateway, the ladder, by which the life of heaven descends into the brokenness of the earth—through the church (despite us being “Jacobs” who are often “on the run”.) The crucial implications of this are explored in this session.
